Set on the slopes of the Waterberg Mountains, Marataba Mountain Lodge looks out over plains and mountainous ridges that extend into the horizon. It’s the kind of view that stops you mid-sentence, morning cup of steaming coffee in hand. Marakele National Park’s views are of the transition zone between two different worlds: the drier Mixed Bushveld of the west and the Waterberg Moist Bushveld of the east. This meeting point of biomes means the wildlife is wonderfully diverse. One moment you’re watching kudu browsing through the beechwoods, the next you’re spotting black rhino through the sickle bush.
The lodge itself feels like a natural extension of its setting. Built to blend into nature, the lodge is solar-powered, eco-conscious and quietly luxurious. Scandinavian in style, its architecture draws from the dramatic landscape it inhabits with stripped-back wood, clean lines, and a natural palette of stone. Each of the five Luxury Rooms opens out over Waterfall Valley, where shifting light and far-off ridgelines make even quiet moments feel cinematic. The main lodge is designed for both solitude and connection, with open-plan dining and lounge areas that spill onto a spacious deck overlooking the plains. There’s also an infinity rock pool that seems to pour into the valley below and a fire deck perfect for swapping stories beneath the stars.
The safari experiences are just as considered. With only a few vehicles out at once, game drives are uncrowded and guided by FGASA-accredited experts who tailor each sighting to your interests. On the other hand, guided bush walks reveal the smaller wonders of the wilderness, from birdsong and fresh tracks, to the scent of rain on earth. For a different perspective, Miss Mara, the lodge’s flat-bottomed riverboat, glides quietly along the Matlabas River. This slow safari lets the landscape come to you: elephants drinking at the water’s edge, fish eagles calling overhead, and hippos yawning in the shallows.
For a night that takes you even further off-grid, spend an evening in the lodge’s solar-powered treehouse. A private, two-level hideout tucked deep in the reserve. Arriving at sunset, you’ll sip sundowners with a view over the landscape before settling into a beautifully prepared picnic dinner. The treehouse has everything you need: an enclosed shower, a comfy king bed, a lounge area and viewing decks made for stargazing. As darkness falls, the bush comes alive beneath you, while overhead, the sky stretches wide and uninterrupted. It’s just you, the wilderness and the stars
The food is, of course, as memorable as the setting. Expect fresh, locally sourced ingredients, global flavours and a touch of the exotic, all tailored to your dietary needs. But it’s not just what’s on the plate that makes dining special here, it’s where you’ll enjoy it. One day it’s a bush breakfast with views over the valley, the next it’s a surprise pancake stop mid-safari or a candlelit dinner under the stars. Every meal is thoughtfully prepared and creatively served, turning each bite into part of the adventure.
At Marataba Mountain Lodge, every detail is designed to draw you into a deeper connection with the wilderness. Whether you’re quietly observing elephants from your deck, walking winding game paths on foot, or drifting along the river at dusk, this is a safari that stirs the soul. It’s the stillness, the scale, and the sense of something greater that lingers long after you’ve left. More than just a journey through nature, it is a soulful adventure.
