Planning Your Safari
Where is Lion Sands located?
Lion Sands is the only private reserve spanning both Sabi Sand Nature Reserve and Kruger National Park in South Africa. We're located along 13 miles of exclusive Sabie River frontage in Mpumalanga Province, approximately 6 hours' drive from Johannesburg.
How do I get to Lion Sands?
Fly into Skukuza Airport in the heart of Kruger National Park - we're between 5 - 20 minutes away by complimentary road transfer. Alternatively, drive from Johannesburg (6 hours). Your safari begins the moment you step into our open vehicles at the airport.
When is the best time to visit?
Lion Sands offers exceptional wildlife viewing year-round thanks to the perennial Sabie River and non-migratory Big Five populations. Winter (May-September) provides excellent game viewing with sparse vegetation, whilst summer (October-April) brings lush landscapes, newborn animals, and spectacular birdlife. Leopard sightings occur with remarkable frequency throughout the year.
What should I pack for safari?
Bring neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, beige), layered items for temperature changes, sun protection, comfortable walking shoes, and camera equipment. We provide blankets, ponchos, and waterproof storage on game drives. Formal wear isn't necessary - safari is relaxed and casual. Is Lion Sands suitable for children? Children of all ages are welcome at Hinkwenu Residence and Fish Eagle Residence. Children 6 years and older are welcome at Tinga Lodge, while the accepted age at River Lodge and Ivory Lodge is 10 years and older. Narina Lodge welcome children 16 years and older for a more contemplative safari experience. Lion Sands has a dedicated Mack & Madi Kids’ Programme for younger guests.
Wildlife and Activities
What animals will I see?
Lion Sands offers consistent Big Five viewing - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. We're especially renowned for leopard sightings due to prime riverine habitat. You'll also encounter hippos, giraffes, zebras, wild dogs, hyenas, and over 300 bird species throughout your stay.
How many game drives are included?
Twice-daily game drives are included - early morning (approximately 3 hours) and late afternoon into evening (approximately 3 hours). Each drive includes a field guide and tracker, with maximum six guests per vehicle for intimate encounters. Refreshment stops feature coffee at sunrise and sundowners at dusk.
Can I do bush walks?
Guided bush walks with armed field guides are available, revealing smaller ecosystems and wildlife tracking that vehicles can't capture. Walks last 1-2 hours and operate based on weather, wildlife activity, and guest fitness levels. Age (>16 years) and health restrictions apply for safety.
What makes Lion Sands' location special?
We're the only private reserve spanning both Sabi Sand Nature Reserve and Kruger National Park, offering 12,400 hectares of exclusive traversing rights. Our 13 miles of Sabie River frontage creates a natural wildlife gathering point, whilst being entirely private means safari without crowds or vehicle congestion.
Do you offer treehouse sleep-outs?
Yes - Chalkley Treehouse and Kingston Treehouse (for guests staying at Ivory Lodge and River Lodge) and Tinyeleti Treehouse (for guests staying at Tinga Lodge and Narina Lodge) offer unforgettable nights sleeping under African stars. Platforms are elevated, open-air, and feature comfortable bedding, en-suite facilities, and two-way radios. Wildlife gathers below whilst you drift off to wilderness sounds.
