PLANNING YOUR JOURNEY
When is the best time to visit South Africa for safari?
South Africa offers exceptional safari experiences year-round, with each season offering unique advantages. The dry winter months (May to September) provide excellent game viewing as animals congregate around water sources and thinner vegetation improves visibility. Summer (November to March) brings lush landscapes, newborn animals, and superb birdwatching, though afternoon thunderstorms are common.
How far in advance should I book my safari?
We recommend booking 6-12 months in advance if you're flexible with travel dates, or 12-18 months ahead if you have specific dates in mind, particularly for travel during South Africa's peak season (June to October) and school holidays. Our most exclusive accommodations fill quickly, and early booking ensures you secure your preferred dates and properties. That said, we occasionally have last-minute availability, so don't hesitate to enquire even for shorter lead times.
Can I customise the featured itineraries?
Absolutely. While our featured itineraries showcase carefully curated experiences, every journey with MORE Collection can be tailored to your preferences. Whether you'd like to extend your stay, combine multiple destinations, add specific activities, or adjust the pace, our Africa Travel Specialists will craft an itinerary that perfectly matches your vision.
What should I pack for an African safari?
We recommend neutral-coloured, lightweight clothing (khaki, olive, beige) in breathable fabrics for game drives. Essentials include: comfortable walking shoes, a wide-brimmed hat, quality sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF 50+), insect repellent, binoculars, and camera equipment. Layering is key - early morning drives can be chilly while midday can be warm. Don't forget a light fleece or jacket for cooler months. We'll send you a detailed packing list upon booking.
Are safaris suitable for young children?
This depends on the individual lodge. Some of our partner properties welcome families with children of all ages and offer private game drives with flexible schedules, while others maintain minimum age requirements (typically 6, 12, or 16 years) to ensure an optimal experience for all guests. When planning your safari, let us know the ages of your children and we'll recommend the most suitable properties and arrange appropriate activities.

DURING YOUR SAFARI
How do game drives work?
Game drives typically take place in the early morning and late afternoon when animals are most active, each lasting approximately 3 hours. You’ll travel in specially adapted open safari vehicles led by experienced field guides and trackers. Drives include refreshment stops to enjoy the landscape and often sundowners on evening excursions.
What type of accommodation can I expect?
A spectrum of accommodation across Africa - from comfortable eco-lodges to elegantly appointed suites in intimate lodges, and expansive private residences perfect for families or groups. Each property is carefully selected for exceptional design, service, and location. All accommodations feature en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning, tea/coffee stations, and mini-bars at selected properties.
Can I charge my camera and devices at the lodges?
Yes, all our lodges provide charging facilities. South Africa uses 230V/50Hz power with types C, D, M, and N plugs (round pins). Most properties provide international adapters and USB charging points in rooms. We recommend bringing a universal adapter and backup camera batteries.
How close do you get to the animals?
Game viewing distances vary based on animal behaviour and park regulations. On private reserves, we can often get remarkably close, sometimes within metres, while maintaining safety and respecting the animals. Our experienced field guides read animal behaviour expertly, ensuring incredible encounters while prioritising both guest safety and wildlife welfare.
Who do I contact if I need help during my journey?
You'll have a dedicated Africa Travel Specialist available throughout your journey. Additionally, each property has a manager on-site to assist with any immediate needs. We'll provide you with all emergency contact details before departure.
