French artist Ivan Milisic has been spending time discovering new inspiration at our Artist Residency at Lion Sands Game Reserve. Travelling all the way from Paris, France, Ivan is a qualified architect whose sensitivity to structure and spatial dynamics helps to shape his artistic compositions. Since 2021, Ivan has participated in numerous exhibitions and has been featured in several international awards and publications. By removing the weight of day-to-day worry at our luxury safari lodge, we give artists the rarest gift of all: the stillness to hear their own creative voice.


Ivan's work centres around the meticulous study of hands and the human body, producing evocative and symbolic visions that invite the viewer to interpret the layered meanings embedded in each work. Alive and transcendent, each of Ivan's pieces explores recurring themes of communication, solitude, and the need for belonging. Ivan is also an accomplished musician, teaching classical piano, classical guitar, and music theory at the Slavic Conservatory of Music in Bagnolet. "My experiences in other artistic disciplines enrich my approach," he says. "Architecture, music, and dance inform my perception of space and rhythm, transforming the canvas into a site for spatial and sensory experimentation."


Ivan spent nearly five weeks at the MORE Collection Artist Residence, in the comfort of our luxury safari lodge. Here, every need and personal indulgence is attended to with the care and discretion for which our staff are renowned.

"As a multidisciplinary artist, I've always been fascinated with the interaction between the body, matter, and space," says Ivan. "From the moment I arrived at Lion Sands – through every game drive and animal encounter – my sensation of space and time was expanded. It's difficult to adequately express the sheer vastness of the African experience on a single canvas."


During his stay, Ivan took the opportunity to venture beyond his niche of human anatomy into rich, stirring depictions of the wilderness around him. "This trip has overwhelmed me so much that it has completely changed my process of creation and even the subject of my artworks. My time at the Artist's Residence has opened me to the work of landscapes and abstract art." Inspired by the magnificence of ancient Africa, Ivan's latest pieces include detailed sketches of animal skulls and scenic renderings in vibrant, bold strokes. Through these pieces, he traces the theme of memory, not as a single moment past, but as a presence layered into the textures of landscapes, objects and time.


"For me, art is two things," says Ivan. "First, it is a process of formalising a thought, a feeling. But it's also about raising questions that compel people to think. Art is less of a statement than it is a question, and it provokes viewers to process the subject or theme in ways they would do naturally." For artists like Ivan, what begins as a journey across country and continent becomes a journey inward. Here, every breath and every brushstroke becomes an expression of the stillness and sense of connection that exists within the soul of Lion Sands.


The Artist Residency brings artists into a creative space where they can focus on their craft while connecting with an appreciative audience. A gallery/studio is situated within Lion Sands Game Reserve and becomes home for weeks at a time, where artists, new and established, can draw unparalleled inspiration from their location and wildlife sightings to create new pieces, while also showcasing their work.

From Paris to the plains: An artist’s retreat at Lion Sands

We are proud to share that Jason Gipson, a field guide at Lion Sands Sabi Sand, has been named Safari Guide of the Year 2025. This title recognises Jason’s exceptional ability to lead immersive, ethical, and inspiring safaris in one of Africa’s most iconic wilderness areas. 

Hosted annually by the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA), Safari Guide of the Year honours the commitment, skill, knowledge, and leadership it takes to be a professional field guide. Only five finalists are selected each year and are tested across eight demanding categories. Jason achieved top honours in both Guided Photographic Experience and Hospitality & Professionalism, while also placing as runner-up in Game Drive, Guided Bushwalk, and Track & Sign. His results highlight not only his technical expertise but also his deep, intuitive connection to the wilderness. 

Jason’s love for the wild began long before his career in guiding. “Our family holidays in the bush made a lasting impression,” he recalls. “Just being out there, surrounded by nature and wildlife, sparked something in me. The idea of spending my life outdoors, exploring and connecting with animals, was incredibly exciting.” 

That passion led him to Bhejane Nature Training, where he began his professional journey. Later, working alongside respected mentors – including Head Field Guide Werner Immelman and Safari Manager Riaan Fourie at Lion Sands Game Reserve – helped refine his approach and deepen his understanding of the bush. 

One of his most memorable moments came early in his career when he and a fellow guide tracked a black rhino on foot with guests. “Sharing that experience, being out in the open with my best mate and guests beside us, was surreal. It was the moment I knew this was exactly where I was meant to be.” 

Over time, Jason’s style has evolved from sharing facts to creating moments of connection. “In the beginning, I was focused on knowledge. Now I’ve realised it’s not about how much you know, but how you share it,” he explains. 

His approach today is intuitive and guest-centred – grounded in presence, awareness, and storytelling. “I want guests to leave with a sense of how extraordinary the African wilderness truly is. It’s not just about ticking off the Big Five; it’s about noticing the details, the sounds, and the lessons hidden in every moment.” 

Looking ahead, Jason hopes to pay his experience forward. “I’d love to mentor new guides and help them find their voice. At the same time, I want to keep learning – maybe specialise further and continue growing.” 

His advice to aspiring field guides is heartfelt: 
“Take the leap. Step out of your comfort zone and go for it. Feedback is gold – it helps you grow. Ask questions, seek advice, and never stop learning. Most importantly, take every opportunity that comes your way – you never know where it might lead.”

As the reopening of Lion Sands Ivory Lodge approaches, Guest Experience Manager Alan Rose sat down with Robert More to share how the rebuilt lodge will take guest experience to an entirely new level. Alan describes the philosophy behind it as a sense of purpose – an approach that ensures thought and attention are applied to every detail while maintaining consistency across the MORE Collection.

Perched above the Sabie River with sweeping views of the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, the lodge’s location has profoundly influenced its guest journey. On arrival, guests will pause beside a stone fountain for a hand-washing ritual using herbal salts crafted in-house – a simple, grounding act designed to help guests become fully present in this extraordinary setting.

Inside the Botanical House Reception, layers of botanicals bring warmth and vitality to the interiors – a tradition that began more than twenty years ago. Robert recalls the early days when sourcing flowers in such a remote area was difficult, and how inspiration came from his mother’s passion for growing orchids. Today, that spark has blossomed into a collection of more than 7 000 orchids and other species, flowering throughout the year. This living golden thread now weaves its way through the entire Collection, from lodges to hotels, carrying a sense of life and continuity wherever you go.

Guests will also encounter the Artist Residency Programme, created in collaboration with the South African Foundation for Contemporary Art. This initiative supports emerging African artists by offering them space to live and work at the lodge, drawing inspiration from the surrounding wilderness. Positioned along the guest pathway, the studio invites quiet moments of discovery – guests can happen upon the artist at work, observe each piece evolve, and engage in conversation about process and inspiration.

The new Ivory Lodge design unfolds as a collection of intimate spaces, each crafted to allow guests the freedom to connect in their own way. Whether you seek a quiet nook overlooking the river, the convivial energy of the bar and lounge, or the indulgence of the wine room and deli, every area is designed to balance privacy with shared experience.

Each couple or group is cared for by a dedicated team – led by their butler and supported by chefs, housekeepers, and sommeliers. Behind the scenes, subtle coordination ensures every need is anticipated without a word being spoken. From a field guide preparing your favourite sundowner to a chef tailoring the evening menu, service feels effortless, natural, and deeply personal.


Field guides spend up to eight hours a day with guests out on safari, and at Lion Sands Ivory Lodge they are among the best in Africa. Accredited through the Field Guide Association of Southern Africa (FGASA), they combine deep ecological knowledge with an authentic respect for the land.

But what truly defines them is their presence. Calm, engaging, and empathetic, they host every drive with care – reading both the rhythm of the bush and the mood of their guests. They are storytellers, interpreters, and companions, turning every outing into a moment of wonder and connection.

Rebuilding Ivory Lodge: The Guest Experience

Finding a suitable vacation spot if you are Jewish can be a challenge.

With so many of our guests looking for a kosher offering, our Lion Sands Game Reserve team decided to create a bespoke solution that caters for different levels of observance. We take care of 'the detail' so that you can fully relax and enjoy your stay.

For strictly kosher guests, we arrange for a Mashgiach to travel to the lodge to kasher a designated kitchen. He then remains on-site throughout your stay, to supervise all meals prepared by our chef.

Meal service and kitchen cleaning are carried out in accordance with kosher principles. We utilise crockery and cutlery that is only used for kosher catering. If you prefer, good-quality, single-use sets are available at a small surcharge.

Stainless steel pots and pans are boiled and torched clean between meals. New sets, kept in their packaging, are also available at a small surcharge.

If you would like a Jewish chef to prepare your meals, we will gladly arrange for someone to be brought in with the Mashgiach.

These kosher dining options are available to guests staying at Ivory Lodge (excluding the Fish Eagle Residence).

For guests staying at Ivory Lodge's Fish Eagle Residence and Lion Sands River Lodge, we offer a self-supervised kosher offering. Kosher meals are freshly prepared on-site in dedicated areas of River Lodge's main kitchen and in the private kitchen of Fish Eagle Villa, which can be inspected and supervised by our guests.

Meal service and kitchen cleaning are carried out in accordance with kosher principles, and include the usage of stainless steel pots and pans, and crockery and cutlery dedicated solely to kosher catering.

Pots are boiled and torched between meals. If guests prefer, good-quality, single-use sets are available at a small surcharge.

Guests can also specify whether they would prefer Mehadrin Commission Meat and Cholov Yisroel dairy products, as well as any other dietary requirements.

Kosher Dining on Safari

It was still dark when our shuttle gently came to a stop near the top of Signal Hill. My partner, still drowsy from the early wake-up call, burrowed deeper into her seat, cosy in the warmth of the vehicle. As I stepped into the crisp winter air, I instinctively breathed into my hands and rubbed them together.

"Just a moment longer and you'll have a hot drink to warm you up from the inside out," our driver called out with a smile, as he carried a table and picnic basket across the road. I assured him the view had already made me forget the cold.

Cape Town, usually vibrant and bustling, had quieted under the cover of night. Below, the grid of streets and buildings was only marked by the shifting glow of traffic signals and the occasional headlights of early morning commuters. To our right, Table Mountain arced across the sky, its dark silhouette outlined by the stars. To our left, the ocean stretched beyond the city, an inky black expanse, calm and endless, its surface scattered with the faint glimmers of distant ships.

A call from our driver, signalling all was ready, broke me from my trance and coaxed my partner out of the shuttle. Once seated at the table, we were handed cosy blankets to drape over our legs as our drinks were prepared. My steaming tea chased away the last of the chill from my hands, while the sweet richness of my partner’s hot chocolate swept the last traces of sleep from her eyes. I watched as she straightened, took a deep breath and savoured the view. She didn’t need to say a word; the look in her eyes told me everything. We clinked our cups, sharing a quiet moment of elation, grateful for how lucky we were to be here.

Our breakfast was served just as the first hints of orange began to creep over the horizon. A spread of muffins, croissants, cured meats, cheeses, fresh fruits and yoghurt lay before us. Every craving was satisfied, from my savoury preferences to my partner’s love for sweetness. For the most part, we ate in comfortable silence, appreciating not just the meal but the breathtaking sunrise unfolding before us. It was a feast for both body and soul.

As the sun climbed higher into the sky, it was time to head back. Reluctantly, we made our way to the shuttle, stealing one last glance at the bird's-eye view of the city we would soon return to. The drive down was peaceful; our hearts still glowing from the experience. When we arrived back at Cape Cadogan, our home away from home, the staff greeted us with their characteristic warmth as well as eager questions about our morning. We could only answer with beaming smiles and a sincere thank you. It felt as though we had already lived a full day and yet, excitingly, our adventures had just begun.

 Signal Hill Breakfast: An Unforgettable Morning Above Cape Town

Lion pride dynamics are a fascinating part of life in the African bush, and at Lion Sands Sabi Sand, we've been fortunate to witness these complex interactions firsthand. Over the past two months, we've observed the intricate dance of power, territory and family bonds among our resident lion prides. From established groups to newcomers, each pride contributes to the ever-changing social landscape of our reserve.
We have been blessed with many sightings of the Southern pride, which continue to thrive and grow. This pride of lionesses has been incredibly efficient at taking care of their cubs and hunting frequently enough that the pride and cubs have constantly been in pristine condition.

We've also been fortunate to start seeing the Styx pride more frequently, although the sightings have been sporadic. The pride seems to be trying to establish itself but is unsure where to settle. Sightings have been scattered throughout the eastern part of the reserve and across the river on the Kruger National Park side as well. Sadly, one of the lionesses lost her cubs, but we are happy to report that another Styx lioness has had three new cubs, and two other lionesses are potentially pregnant. This gives us hope for the pride's growth and future.

The Msuthu pride has been less visible lately, as they seem to prefer the northern parts of the reserve and further into the property north of us. Of late, they rarely venture deep into our reserve, limiting our sightings. There are reports of new cubs in the pride, although we have yet to see the new additions ourselves.

The Gijima males have been very busy lately, moving back and forth between all these prides and mating with the Styx pride females. Recently, we've noticed them spending more time apart, with the smaller Gijima male hanging around the Styx pride, while the larger male seems to prefer being around the Msuthu pride. Although they do still join up and travel together, this splitting behaviour worried us, especially as we noticed the Mkhuhlu males, a coalition of four, venturing closer to our western boundary.
Our concerns were justified soon after when tragedy struck. Three of the Mkhuhlu males came over the boundary and caused chaos. They sent one of the dominant Gijima male lions running when he was caught alone with two members of the Styx pride. As a result, in his retreat, he led the Mkhuhlu males to one of the Styx lionesses who'd been hiding cubs in the Sabi River, resulting in her losing them to the invading males.
The Southern pride faced a similar threat but was saved by the quick thinking and strong survival instincts of the lead lioness. She managed to get her older daughters to escort the cubs westward while she stood her ground and fended off the Mkhuhlu males. The Gijima males regrouped and chased the intruders back east. While we haven't seen the Mkhuhlu males since, they're likely biding their time nearby, aware of the resident prides and looking for another opportunity to move in.
As we reflect on these recent lion encounters, we're reminded of the incredible complexity of lion society. The ebb and flow of territories, the formation and dissolution of coalitions, and the constant struggle for survival paint a vivid picture of life for these apex predators. The resilience shown by the Southern pride, the adaptability of the Styx pride, and the strategic movements of the male coalitions all contribute to the ever-evolving lion landscape at Lion Sands Sabi Sand.

 In Pursuit Of Excellence: The MORE Field Guide Way

Artist Robert Leggat (Robbie) returned to Lion Sands for his second stay on the Artist Residency at Ivory Lodge. Inspired by wildlife encounters on his previous stay, he has created a master artwork entitled 'Vicious Circle' that depicts the intense battle between lion and hyena.

"This piece has definitely been one of the most career-challenging pieces I have taken on. You get this concept in your mind, and normally I think first of the technical when I am working, and I try and solve things. But in this piece, I just started working, aiming to get the technical right as I went," explains Robbie.

Robbie is a renowned South African bronze sculptor passionate about wildlife, which he celebrates in highly realistic sculptures, whether a massive hippo or a tiny bird. His incredible attention to detail is achieved by spending hours studying and drawing his subjects.

'Vicious Circle' was inspired by a spinning circular saw blade that reminded Robbie of teeth and claws – and that was his starting point.

"When I was at Lion Sands, seeing lion and hyena at close quarters almost daily, it was just the most incredible reference to have. To get to the soul of these animals and their intense hatred for each other, both competing for the same food source, both dangerous and vicious animals when they attack each other. It's a real vicious circle – so that was the inspiration of the piece," shares Robbie.

"Normally, I do quite conservative bronzes which I thoroughly enjoy but being at Lion Sands puts you in a different headspace, it's an opportunity to explore one's creativity."

By Robbie's own account, this is by far the most complicated mould he has ever tackled in his career. The sculpture portrays a blur of movement within the fight that takes place between lion and hyena. The heads seem to flick into space where the bottom jaw becomes the top jaw as the piece turns.

"It really is a sculpture that engages you and draws you in, because there's such visual information that one must take in. It captivates you. It's very exciting to start pushing one's boundaries technically and visually, and for me, this piece has been both of those rolled up into one very complicated but very exciting sculpture."

The Vicious Circle Artwork Of Lion And Hyena

Lerato is a Johannesburg-born visual artist whose childhood passion for drawing and artistic expression has paved a path to a lifelong career in painting, sculpture and poignant installations. His journey includes training at the Johannesburg Art Gallery and the Katlehong Art Centre, as well as a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria. 

Lerato’s work draws inspiration from lived experiences, in a range of media including traditional acrylic, oil and graphite, as well as unconventional displays comprising various organic and manmade materials. His work is heightened by the broader themes of memory, loss, and identity fracture and reformation across time and space. 

Within the pristine tranquillity afforded by Lion Sands Ivory Lodge, Lerato enjoys the opportunity to explore these concepts, saying, “Being in the wilderness has given me the space to slow down and reconnect with myself. The quiet, open landscapes allow for deep reflection and uninterrupted focus, which helps me access the memories and emotions that shape my art.”


The award-winning international artist weaves memory and meaning into every brushstroke and creation. His recent solo installation, Whispers of What Was (2025), held at the iconic Constitution Hill, invited audiences to reflect on the echoes of the past. Lerato’s creative journey has also taken him across continents, from artist residencies in Senegal and Germany to exhibitions in Cape Town, London and the Netherlands. His work forms part of respected collections around the world, including Foundation H and Africa First, a testament to the stories his mesmerising depictions tell. 

“I see art as an opportunity to break the chains of reality, even if it’s only for a moment,” says Lerato. “I enjoy being in that space, where I’m not imprisoned by what reality is. It’s more than a form of escape; it’s where I can truly indulge in my thoughts.”

What better place to find such freedom than the secluded comfort of a safari lodge, tucked away in the African bushveld? Surrounded by a vast, extraordinary wilderness, the Artist Residency offers creators like Lerato a powerful shift from the demands of daily routines. “Physically witnessing the wildlife – their presence, movement, and diversity – was grounding and awe-inspiring,” says Lerato. “Observing the animals in their natural rhythm reminded me of the importance of stillness, patience and coexistence, which deeply influences how I approach my work.”

During his stay at the Artist Residence, Lerato produced a collection of vibrant paintings that demonstrate his courageous approach to colour and thoughtful sketches that invite quiet contemplation and appreciation for detail.

She managed to get her older daughters to escort the cubs westward while she stood her ground and fended off the Mkhuhlu males. The Gijima males regrouped and chased the intruders back east. While we haven't seen the Mkhuhlu males since, they're likely biding their time nearby, aware of the resident prides and looking for another opportunity to move in.

As we reflect on these recent lion encounters, we're reminded of the incredible complexity of lion society. The ebb and flow of territories, the formation and dissolution of coalitions, and the constant struggle for survival paint a vivid picture of life for these apex predators. The resilience shown by the Southern pride, the adaptability of the Styx pride, and the strategic movements of the male coalitions all contribute to the ever-evolving lion landscape at Lion Sands Sabi Sand.

Wild Wonders For Children At Lion Sands

Artist Craig Cameron-Mackintosh finds inspiration from nature on our Artist Residency at Lion Sands Ivory Lodge. He is a versatile artist whose name shines in the world of painting and filmmaking. He earned acclaim by clinching the prestigious Sanlam Portrait Award in 2019 and has more recently begun to explore landscape and abstraction.

Craig grew up in White River, Mpumalanga, so he is no stranger to the bushveld. He showed a talent for drawing from an early age and moved to Cape Town in 2007 to study filmmaking at AFDA which has deeply influenced his artistic career; not only lending a sense of cinema and story to his subject matter but also informing his technique. In 2019, he ventured into the realm of documentary filmmaking, unveiling 'Billy Monk – Shot in the Dark' delving into the life and work of the legendary South African photographer during the tumultuous 1960s.

Craig's fusion of painting and cinema yields captivating results, channelling the essence of photography with a unique twist. His canvases come alive with silhouettes, overexposure, and a mesmerising play of blurriness.

"I count myself extremely lucky to be the Artist in Residence at Lion Sands. Peace and quiet and the spaciousness of the Ivory Lodge studio makes for a richly creative environment. The scents of the bush, bird songs and warm Lowveld air transport you to a different state of mind. But the beautiful scenery aside, there is such luxury in the opportunity to simply concern myself with what is on my easel, without the everyday tasks and distractions of life that would otherwise get in the way of painting. As a result, I have found that I am creating more artworks, which aligns with the inspiration that is all around me – starting on day one with the descent into Skukuza Airport on the plane. I am currently exploring the idea of abstracted bush landscapes as seen from an aerial view with the green, white and blue colour scheme of the land, hazy horizon and sky."

"While I am most well-known for my portraiture, I am enjoying branching into landscapes, bushveld flora, textures and new colour palettes – the electric colours of the blue-tailed sandveld lizards that hunt for insects in the studio, for example, have inspired some abstracts and experimental paintings on paper. Another studio visitor that resulted in a painting was a lesser striped swallow that flew into the large studio windows. I helped revive the stunned little bird which allowed me the chance to get a close-up look at his colours – a burnt-orange head, stripey white chest and black wings that fade into midnight blue on his back. I placed him on the raked sand bed and kept an eye on him until he regained his bearings and flew away. The small oil-on-panel painting was a lovely way to document a special moment during my time at Lion Sands and an unusual way to depict a bird not typically grounded like that.

Another aspect I enjoy is the chance to interact with new guests on a daily basis. It is a nice way to get direct feedback from fresh eyes as you progress with your work. I look forward to my first showcase evening where I will display a selection of finished paintings as well as works in progress to guests and staff at the lodge. The Lion Sands team has been so welcoming and supportive."

 Nature Inspires Art At Lion Sands

Artist Peter Eastman further explored his love for nature within his art whilst on the Artist Residency at Lion Sands Ivory Lodge. As a painter based in Cape Town for the last few years, most of Peter's focus has been on a small tract of indigenous old growth forest, located in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Here the likeness of this forest he painted over and over, a study of light and illusion, documenting the process of decay and vegetating over time. The study of this forest has seen these paintings journey through abstraction and realism.

Mostly working in oil paint on large aluminium panels where typically the forest paintings are done in two contrasting colours in a matte and dry brush technique that reference the impermanence of chalk on chalkboard. Peter was at Lion Sands to explore the mood, shapes, and light of the subtropical woodland and grasslands of the lowveld and share his artistic process with guests. Peter's time at Lion Sands was arranged by curator Amy Ellenbogen.

Peter grew up in South Africa and started his work career as an antiquity restorer in London. He also attended the University of Cape Town's Michaelis School of fine art. It was in 2014 that he began to focus on paintings of atmospheric forest-scapes.

Peter is known for his distinctive monochromatic style and uses a technique of images held in shallow relief depictions that remain nearly invisible until the viewer is positioned correctly for light to throw the images into relief, reflecting changing tone and colour. This technique was probably most successfully used in his monumental 'Horse', 2005.

In 2007, Peter exhibited at Cape Town Gallery. 'Supernature' was a naturalistic large-scale series of enamel and acrylic paintings on aluminium sheets, depicting the portraits of various owl species relating to themes of superstition and luck. In 2010, he exhibited a series of black portraits at Primo Marella gallery in Milan, Italy, curated by Yacouba Konaté.

Peter worked together with 17 International artists to produce a poster for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The work was later auctioned at Phillips de Pury in New York City.

Peter has delighted in his time at Lion Sands and had this to say, "The experience of a month in the bush veld has crept into my paintings in surprising ways, with inspiration coming from the electric blue lizards to getting to know the personalities of the leopards and the atmosphere of the still summer night drives. It's such a privilege to be able to spend time in this vast nature reserve, that feels almost prehistoric in the way that you can observe the rhythms of nature."

 Lizards and leopards at Lion Sands inspire artist Peter Eastman 

Orchids and African safaris may not seem connected, but these intriguing, showy, flowering plants have become an integral part of the MORE Collection experience. If you've ever been on a luxury African safari with us, you'll know it's the small touches that often create the most memorable moments. For many of our guests, the sight of an orchid instantly transports them back to one of our lodges – and the special memories made there.

Orchids and botanicals have become synonymous with our stays, and the idea behind incorporating these exquisite blooms across our properties came from a desire to bring the warmth and inclusivity of a private home into our guest experience. These colourful blooms grace guest bedrooms, bathrooms, our spas and various other places throughout our lodges and hotels, such as windowsills and mantelpieces.

Inspired by our matriarch, Louise More, who has cultivated orchids for over three decades, the MORE Collection Botanical project started in 2014 with 1 200 orchids inherited from Louise’s private collection. In fact, the original shade house still stands with all the original wood preserved, on Folly Farm near White River, which has now grown to accommodate eight shade houses and 8 500 plants, primarily orchids but also bromeliads and spekboom - an indigenous plant capable of absorbing 4 to 10 tonnes of greenhouse gas per hectare each year. This means selected orchids and bromeliad varieties from around the world are put on display for guests year-round.

“Orchids are the most highly evolved of all flowering plants. Some species have developed the ability to mimic the appearance and scent of female insects to attract males to pollinate them. There are also more than 25 000 species of orchids, making them the biggest group in the plant kingdom,” explains Louise.

Operations Manager, Jen Hadley-Lowes oversees the day-to-day management and is as passionate as Louise. “The orchids on display at the lodges and hotels are often labelled
with details about their history, colours, fragrances, and growing conditions for our guests to learn more about them. If you’ve ever tried to transplant, repot or care for an orchid, you’ll know they’re extremely sensitive, requiring a gentle touch, the ideal position, and just the right amount of water and light.

This makes successful blooming even more special. We carry species that we know will retain their bloom and once their flowering period is over, the plants are returned to the shade houses on Folly Farm for further care,” says Jen. “I have a soft spot too for the bromeliads, and they are truly making their mark. They do incredibly well in drier environments and our guests are just as intrigued with them. They are a fitting companion to our orchids.”

“We are a small team, and this project has provided the incredible opportunity to upskill two of our employees, David Hlatshwayo and Phumlani Nyundu, who have grown tremendously under the tutelage of our prominent horticulturists Doug McMurtry and Shane Burns,” adds Jen.

Each of our properties has a distinctive botanical theme that speaks to its location and personality, and it is no surprise that orchids have filtered into this. At Cape Cadogan Boutique Hotel, the wild and iconic green wood orchid (Bonatea speciosa) felt like a fitting alignment with the green theme so prominent at this hotel. At Ivory Lodge, the leopard orchid (Ansellia africana) captured our attention, while the vibrant Flame Lily (Gloriosa superba) at River Lodge reflects the energy and warmth of this connection-rich safari retreat along the Sabie River.

At Lion Sands Tinga Lodge, the delicate Wild Verbena (Pentanisiq prunelloides) embodies the classic safari elegance and heritage that defines this lodge, and the Blue Plumbago (Plumbago auriculata) of Narina Lodge represents the nurturing natural beauty and gentle, grounded personality of this peaceful sanctuary.

Moving to Marataba Game Lodges, at Safari Lodge, the unique Waterberg Kalanchoe honours the distinctive Waterberg environment, perfect for active family safari adventures, while the hardy Veld Violet (Ruellia cordata) of Mountain Lodge symbolises the bold, soulful safari adventure that awaits in this mountain setting.

How The Allure Of Orchids Elevates Our Safari Experience

Artist Helen van Stolk traded her StudioVOOP premises in Salt River in Cape Town, for some creative time at Lion Sands Ivory Lodge on our Artist Residency. Her infectious joy has enthralled our guests who have had the opportunity chat to Helen and hear more about her creative process.

"When I touched down at Skukuza on the 4th of March for my five-week residency, I was met by Field Guide Cruz. The warmth of the 38-degree day doesn't match the exceptional warmth of the staff at Lion Sands - hospitality and genuine kindness at its best. The studio and gallery space that I have been gifted for this time at Ivory Lodge is my new haven," says Helen.

"I am privileged to see the inner workings of a five-star game lodge and to immerse myself in my creative practice surrounded by such beauty and magnificence. Breathtaking moments on game drives and the lodge overlooking the Sabie River will be etched in my mind forever.

Words, stories, and how something feels have always played a big part in my work. Here at Lions Sands experiences are amplified - partly because of the quiet times which allow me to absorb the beauty and let it all sink in, and partly because of the stories the field guides, trackers and staff share with such generosity.

We've seen so many elephants whilst here and I couldn't resist looking up the symbolism. Ultimately, the elephant is a spirit animal that brings you strength, wisdom, stability, and love. Its presence in your life means that you are a person of power, capable of meeting any challenge that comes your way. But he's also a constant reminder to be kind, compassionate and respectful to others. I just love that.

There have been some beautifully meaningful interactions with guests, chatting colour, nature's design and the inspirations that make us go wow! Special moments when guests have become lost in my work or shared what they see or feel - that engagement is priceless. One guest came in tired and said she left feeling inspired and energised. Another guest contacted me when she got back to the States to say that I have inspired her to paint again. This all makes my heart sing.

An engaging young guest, Kelsey, posed a thought-provoking question to me, asking what the biggest change in my work has been since arriving at Lion Sands? I have been pondering this… How my handwriting doesn't change much as I move through life, but my story does – it evolves, it gets richer, it becomes more layered - with time, with experiences, that weave their way into my work, that weave their way into my being, that I strive to share in my paintings.

With time spent here, my sensory experience of the world and the stories that I am filled with is amplified intensely relative to a more familiar life at home. The magic of the bush, its textures, nature's perfect design inspires. That is the gift, the treasures that I have received in abundance on this residency.

"I am working on some big works, so still a work in progress but getting closer to the completion of three. The inspiration - thoughts of the amazing trackers whose lives are so intricately connected to the soil, as well as a majestic leopard sighting, the birds and the small creatures that gift us with such vibrant colour. I am one lucky artist on one wonderful adventure! Thank you, Lion Sands."

Helen created a limited print edition of scarves based on her artwork, especially for her time with us.

Helen's journey has been a dynamic one, marked by various collaborations and accolades. Prior to StudioVOOP, she honed her craft at Frere Street Studios and Eastside Studios, sharing spaces with fellow artists like Lesley Charnock and Margie Johnson. In 2010, Helen became a member of the South African Society of Artists, marking the beginning of her participation in prestigious exhibitions at Kirstenbosch and earning accolades, including multiple awards in 2010 and 2011. Notably, in 2011, she achieved the highest overall score ever awarded at the society's Annual Exhibition. Her talent further garnered attention when she was invited to exhibit at the prestigious SASA Merit exhibition in 2012. Throughout the years, Helen continued to flourish, and her first solo exhibition titled 'The Gold that Binds Us' was hosted at Cape Gallery in 2017 with subsequent exhibitions at Art in the Yard, Franschhoek.

 Her dedication to her craft is evident as she continues to explore her preferred medium of oils, seamlessly blending abstraction and figurative elements. Inspired by the vibrant scenes of her surroundings and her travels, Helen's art has found homes worldwide. Alongside her studio work, she occasionally indulges in plein-air painting and sketching, drawing inspiration from the captivating characters and moments she encounters. Helen's art is represented in esteemed galleries such as Cape Gallery, AiTY in Franschhoek with her exhibition Full of Flirt in 2023, and StateoftheART in Cape Town, cementing her place in the contemporary art scene. Flirting With Colour At Lion Sands

Arising out of the earth and blending into the landscape, the award-winning Lion Sands Ivory Lodge in Sabi Sand, Mpumalanga, was inspired by its breath-taking natural surroundings. The design is both a reflection and an incorporation of the African bush, treading lightly and honouring the space it occupies on the banks of the Sabie River.

The lodge and the pristine environment that is her backdrop are the inspiration and home to renowned South African artists, who have been invited to the Artist Residency. A gallery and studio situated within the lodge welcomes local artists to live, work, and interact with guests. Staying for up to six weeks, the artists are able to draw unparalleled inspiration from their location and wildlife sightings to create new pieces, while also showcasing their work.

With the intention to promote South African art and develop new talent, MORE Collection launched the Artist Residency in 2021. The concept also echoes the desire among travellers worldwide to have meaningful, immersive, and experiential experiences. Guests can spend time engaging with the talented artists, learning about their creative processes, and perhaps investing in an original, collectible artwork.

"Historically we have always supported local artists," explains CEO and Custodian Robert More, "and our aim with the Artist Residency is to bring them into a creative space where they can focus on their craft, while connecting with an appreciative audience. For our guests, this is an enriching and unique experience that enhances their stay at Lion Sands Ivory Lodge."

The Artist Residency creates a bridge between the creative world and conservation, offering artists a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in nature while sharing their passion with like-minded guests from around the world.


The Artist Residency has already hosted three talented sculptors, carefully selected as custodians of nature in their own right by translating the natural world into the medium
of their choice.

Sculptor Chris Röhm, a self-taught artist who, after working at a bronze foundry, developed a love for the process of casting in bronze. Chris is also a champion of environmental awareness and a sculpture close to his heart is that of a rhino entitled 'Take your best shot' – highlighting the threat to the species.

Renowned bronze sculptor Robert Leggatt is an artist whose passion for his subject matter results in exceptional, highly realistic sculptures of wildlife from massive hippos to tiny birds. The incredible attention to detail is achieved by spending hours studying and drawing his subject. He was joined by his son Brendan, who has followed in his father's footsteps and also sculpts in bronze, albeit using a different casting process for his creations.

Victoria Newton-King, a self-taught sculptor, uses a rare wax technique, and her pangolin stole hearts at Lion Sands Ivory Lodge. She describes her style as quirky and playful, and her sculptures range from small maquettes right up to 1.5m high.

As this uplifting concept of the Artist Residency continues to grow, evolve, and reveal the spirit of Africa to guests from all over the world, so too will the importance of preserving our heritage and conserving our wildlife remain centre stage.

Artists find a home at Lion Sands

The black rhino population of Marataba can be elusive, in comparison to the white rhino, so sightings are always extra special.

Here in Marataba, at the foot of the Waterberg mountains, the black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) can still be found. These iconic and powerful creatures are sadly critically endangered - their numbers are estimated to be around only 6 000. Historically black Rhinos were widespread throughout the African continent, but due to rampant poaching and habitat loss, their population has drastically declined. 

The white rhinos of Marataba are grazers – they love the grass, so I always compare them to the person who loves to hang out in the park and play frisbee. They are used to the hustle and bustle of the open, impala on the left, zebra on the right, and a safari vehicle grumbling past every now and then. They are not too phased by us; in fact, they mostly pay us no attention at all. This can be a little frustrating when said rhino is having a nap in the middle of the road and we have places to be… but there are worse traffic jams in life. 

The black rhinos on the other hand are browsers, which means that they love eating leaves. Their dung is easily recognised by the twigs we find in the rhino middens, cut at perfect 45-degree angles. Unlike their wide-lipped cousins, they do not go to the park for frisbee, but rather hang out in the bushy thickets. Of these, Marataba has plenty - rhino heaven! However, this also means that when our rhino friend is browsing happily in the thickets, and a safari vehicle turns a corner, he does not stick around for long. 

Many of our Marataba guests have had the privilege of viewing the face of a black rhino for about 10 seconds (while he tries to decide what is happening) and then seeing a tail followed by the sound of a thousand kilograms crashing through the bush.

A few weeks ago, I had some South Africans on the vehicle. They had been to Marataba before and had decided to bring the whole family. South Africans usually have only a handful of animals that they have not seen in the wild. Usually, I hear, “Laz, we would love to see a honey badger,” or “Laz, we would love to see an aardwolf.” For this family, it was a black rhino.

We had a few days of great game viewing behind us, and on our last morning I decided to head down the valley to Windmill plains. I explained to them that although there is a lot of  evidence of black rhinos in terms of middens and browsed plants, I have only seen a few on drives. “No pressure Laz, we love being in the bush, but it would be amazing to see one.”

It is such a beautiful drive, the road goes right down the valley and then cuts to the foot of the mountain range, the landscape ever-changing from open grassy plains to thick Cluster Leaf and Burkea forests. As we drove right up to the mountainside, one of the guests pointed out a tree halfway up and while most of us looked left, one guest looked right… right into the face of a black rhino.

We stopped, went back and I braced myself for the great escape. It never came. Instead, we just sat there mesmerised by this prehistoric-looking creature that clearly was just as fascinated by us as we were by it. It would approach the vehicle, and then back off a bit, think about life for a while, pretend that we are not there, change its mind and come towards us again to inspect - if this thing that appeared out of nowhere was in fact there. Whenever it came too close, I would just make a small noise and it would back off a little to what it felt was a safe distance, and then we would repeat the dance.

At some point, we decided to leave it to finish its breakfast, and as we left it ran parallel to the road for a little while as if to say: “Hey wait! We just met; you can’t leave now!”

I don’t think words can really describe that feeling you have when you have had an encounter like that. Amazing, fantastic, magical? You drive away with a feeling of did-that-really-just-happen?

I said my goodbyes to my South African guests that morning and welcomed new guests from the USA, onto my vehicle. “This is our first safari, and we are happy to see anything. No pressure, Laz.”

On our first drive that afternoon the bush was quiet, I’m not sure we even saw an impala. But the scenery was beautiful, and I knew of the perfect place to stop for evening drinks. Rooiklippies is on the river, with a great view of the mountain that turns orange-red in the setting sun. But it seems that it was not just us who wanted to enjoy a beautiful sundowner - Diceros bicornis was there as well. He looked at us, walked up to the vehicle, very relaxed he stood there for a few seconds as if reading the sign on the door and then turned around and started browsing the bushes just a few metres away from us. We watched him for about ten minutes before we set off looking for another drinks spot.

My guests had no idea how special their sighting was, and, in fact, we saw a black rhino every day while they were here. But maybe as the population of black rhino grows and they become more used to the hum of the safari vehicles, we will have more of these special encounters with these prehistoric animals.

Black Rhino Moments At Marataba

Artist Gary Davis is embracing the environment and has been sharing snippets of his moments whilst on the Artist Residency programme at Lion Sands Ivory Lodge. 

We loved his sentiments on time: "The concept of time and how we label it into days does not exist here in the bush. There is doing and then resting…that is it. Everything is in harmony on the grand scale." Here, Gary has found his comfort zone "embedded with creatures great and small".

Gary obtained a National Diploma in Graphic design at Wit's Technicon and briefly worked in the advertising industry, as well as glass installation, before honouring the inner call to create art out of 'charcoal', his medium of preference. He then turned his home in Knysna into his studio and gallery. His work is of such astounding technical ability, that it is often thought to be photographic images, until closer inspection reveals the little dances in black and white, light and shade - a physical manifestation of inward journeys that make up the whole.

Gary has completed several private commissions and sold numerous works privately in South Africa and abroad. He knew it was time to let the world see his work in real time and was excited to share his work at Ivory Lodge and engage with guests on his artistic process. 

Gary had a big reveal evening to guests and is creating an interactive piece that guests and staff have signed. The interactive piece which will be titled "Brothers in Arms" will be showcased when his two-month residency ends in early January 2023. Gary has completed artworks of an elephant, a lion, and a cheetah, whilst on site.


The stunning lion cub is part of the Styx pride and called The Quiet Storm after Storm, a student from MORE Field Guide College who is on her field guide internship at Lion Sands. The artwork was inspired by an image that Gary observed on Storm's cell phone and that was enough for Gary to then tell his story. 'The soul is captured in the eyes,' says Gary. At Gary's request Storm added two zen strokes to this special artwork. 

Gary is constantly inspired by his surroundings, and in sync with the African bush. He has joined a few game drives where cheetah and leopard have caught his eye. He wrapped up his third piece, a cheetah called Mbasa meaning gift in Xhosa. Gary was inspired by the cheetah and the photographs he captured took him 'from inspiration to creation'. This artwork fits in perfectly with International Cheetah Day (4 Dec). Cheetahs are considered vulnerable by IUCN and their numbers are at a low of around 7 500.

Gary's personal quest is the pursuit of mastering his artistic potential, attempting to better understand light and perception and his medium, playing with thoughts and energies we all experience, but are seldom inclined to explore. Attention to detail and an unforgiving demand for the highest standards of perfection, often confines him to his studio for days of solitude and meditation, crafting his skills to levels not often achieved.

Harmony on the grand scale with artist Gary Davis

The hiking trails in Cape Town range from easy to strenuous. Always be prepared for all kinds of weather strong winds are common, and the day can start off very hot and cool down dramatically, especially at the top of Table Mountain. Carry lots of water and don't forget a windbreaker jacket. Conveniently, you can catch the cable car down for all the Table Mountain hikes. These experiences with guides range from three to six hours in total so plan your day accordingly.

These are our top ten recommended trails:

1. Platteklip Gorge, Table Mountain

The most popular path up Table Mountain is the Platteklip Gorge trail, which is mostly comprised of steep, stone steps. It is exposed to the sun so head off early to avoid the heat. Allow 3 to 4 hours and our guides will ensure an interactive and educational experience so enjoy the moments and the scenery, there’s no rush.

2. Tranquillity Cracks, Table Mountain

Tranquillity Cracks is a semi-challenging trail that starts in scenic Camps Bay and leads you to caves, deep fissures and yellowwood forest at the top of Table Mountain.

3. Maclear’s Beacon Loop, Table Mountain

This easy trail begins and ends at the cable car station on top of Table Mountain and offers views over Cape Town City Bowl and the Hely-Hutchinson Reservoir.

4. Pipe Track, Table Mountain

Popular for sunrise and sunset hikes, Pipe Track offers views of the 12 Apostles, Lion’s Head and Camps Bay. It is a moderate route that is rocky but not steep.

5. Skeleton Gorge, Table Mountain

This steep trail starts in the beautiful Kirstenbosch Gardens (there is an entrance fee) and climbs through jungle-like forests with streams and small waterfalls, to the Hely- Hutchinson Reservoir.

6. India Venster, Table Mountain

The narrow spaces between rugged escarpment on this trail create a window - or ‘venster’ in Afrikaans - through which you can view Devil’s Peak. We highly recommend a guide as it is a challenging route and best avoided if you are afraid of heights.

7. Lion’s Head

Lion’s Head is a favourite for full-moon and sunrise hikes, not least because of its panoramic views of Cape Town that on a clear day stretch all the way to Robben Island. This one can get busy due to its popularity, but it ranks up there as one of the most special experiences.

8. Kasteelspoort

Known for its ‘Diving Board’ section where hikers like to pose for photos, Kasteelspoort winds up the western slopes of the 12 Apostles. It is a moderate to difficult route and best done in the morning.

9. Signal Hill

This, mostly level, trail runs along the spine of Signal Hill to Lion’s Head. Popular for sunset hikes, it is great for beginners and is only 1h 30 mins long.

10. Cape Point

Cape Point offers a plethora of trails ranging from easy to challenging. Follow paths to beaches, tidal pools and lighthouses - all with the most spectacular views. This area has much to offer for hikers - fynbos which is unique to this area, and you get a chance to see more mammals here than anywhere else on the peninsula such as different antelope species, ostrich, baboons, and other small animals, reptiles and bird species.

Explore the luscious vegetation and towering trees of Newlands Forest on paths that streams and waterfalls. There are many trails to choose from, including family-friendly routes and more challenging hikes. After hiking around Cape Town, a cool dip in Cape Cadogan Boutique Hotel’s mosaic pool may be just what you need or soothe your muscles with a massage at the onsite spa.
