Which airport is closest to Monwana Game Lodge?

Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (HDS) is the closest commercial airport to Monwana, situated 31km from the lodge. It’s the primary access point for most guests and the most practical entry to the Greater Kruger’s central region.

Commercial flights connect Hoedspruit daily from Johannesburg and Cape Town, making it easy to incorporate Monwana Game Lodge into almost any South African itinerary. For guests arriving from other game reserves, Federal Air operates scheduled shuttle flights between major reserves and Thornybush Nature Reserve’s airstrip, which sits within the reserve itself.

Can you fly directly from Johannesburg or Cape Town?

From Johannesburg, yes. Direct commercial flights from Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport to Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport run daily and take approximately one hour. This is the most common routing for both South African and international guests.

From Cape Town, the journey typically routes via Johannesburg. This adds a connection but not complexity – the total travel time from Cape Town to Monwana, including the final road transfer, remains well within a single day of travel. Guests flying in from overseas also connect through Johannesburg, making O.R. Tambo International the natural gateway for the final leg to Hoedspruit.

For many travellers, this journey is also the start of their first safari experience. Read more about whether Monwana Game Lodge is a good choice for first-time safari travellers.

Can guests self-drive to Monwana?

Self-drive is a practical option that works well for guests already in the region, those combining a road trip with their safari, or South African travellers who prefer to travel overland. Monwana Game Lodge is accessible by self-drive from Hoedspruit, Hazyview, Nelspruit, and Kruger Orpen Gate. For those making the full road trip from Johannesburg, it's approximately six to seven hours on well-maintained national roads, descending through the escarpment and into the Lowveld bushveld.

Once inside Thornybush Nature Reserve, the lodge is notified of your arrival. From there, Monwana Game Lodge signage guides you from the main reserve gate to the lodge, where your warm welcome awaits.

Full directions, including major road routes and reserve routes, are provided ahead of your stay, but are also available from the MORE Collection team. One important note for self-drivers: Google Maps is the recommended navigation tool for reaching Monwana Game Lodge – the Waze app does not locate the lodge accurately.
