Upper Union Restaurant celebrates third consecutive win at the Gourmet Guide Awards

Upper Union Restaurant has once again been recognised by the Jenny Handley Gourmet Guide Awards, receiving a One Plate for the third year in a row. The awards, which celebrate South Africa’s top culinary destinations, are among the country’s most respected industry accolades.

The Gourmet Guide Awards honour the people and places that have elevated South Africa’s culinary identity. The Guide’s unique plated rating system is based on anonymous assessments by both local and international industry professionals. A One Plate is awarded for excellent cuisine, Two Plates for exceptional dining worth a detour, and Three Plates for world-class destination dining worthy of a flight.

Founder and curator Jenny Handley describes the spirit behind the awards: “ Our unwavering commitment to originality and impartiality continues to set this guide apart. The foundation of the JHP Gourmet Guide is built on trust, respect and credibility.” She continues on to say, “Our use of global benchmarking ensures that our restaurants can hold their own against international counterparts, meeting and exceeding the expectations of well-travelled, discerning diners who come to this country.”

According to the 2026 Gourmet Guide, “Chef Amori Burger is relentless in her pursuit of producing flavour bombs that wow every diner, whatever the season, with every element made from scratch.”

At Upper Union, food, wine and people come together in an atmosphere that’s spirited yet unpretentious. The space balances refinement and warmth, with deep green interiors, soft lighting and an atmosphere that invites connection. Whether you arrive for a leisurely lunch, cocktails at the bar, or a lively dinner with friends, Upper Union captures the creative, social energy of the city while staying grounded in genuine hospitality. For those seeking an inspired dining experience that celebrates connection and creativity, the restaurant continues to deliver, with each plate telling a story worth sharing.
